Pregnancy Plan - Ingredients and Their Benefits:
B Vitamins - associated with hormonal health. Easily depleted through stress, alcohol or smoking. Research has shown that giving Vitamin B6 to women who have trouble conceiving may help increase fertility.
Biotin - essential for the healthy division of foetal cells, including those in the central nervous system. The concentration of biotin in breast milk is 15 times higher than in the mother's blood, which suggests that Biotin is very important for a baby's growth and development.
Betacarotene - A good maternal store helps protect against cell mutation following conception. Safe form of delivery of extra Vitamin A.
Vitamin C - an important anti-oxidant associated with fertility. Also important for placental development, blood flow and organ development. Helps with absorption of Iron.
Vitamin D - Recent research suggests that the status of the maternal store of Vitamin D can be influential in the development of a baby's bones. Also crucial for the absorption of Calcium, which is important in its own right for healthy bone formation.
Calcium - linked to hormone development. Population generally deficient. Valuable for developing foetus. Also needed during pregnancy for the development of the nervous system and healthy bones and teeth. The foetus accumulates Calcium rapidly during the 1st Trimester of pregnancy and a mother needs to build up a good store so that plenty is available for her baby without depletion of her own bone material. Vegetarian and vegan mothers and those under 18 need to be especially careful to avoid deficiency.
Chromium - necessary for regulating blood sugar levels. Stimulates synthesis of protein in growing baby's tissues. Recommended total intake of 30mcg per day during pregnancy.
CoEnzymeQ10 - associated with energy levels in cells and promotes blood flow.
Vitamin E - another important anti-oxidant. Deficiency may cause damage to reproductive tissues.
Folic Acid - known to help prevent spina bifida. Works together with Vitamin B12 to ensure a baby's genetic codes are intact. Increased evidence of benefit of supplementation for a whole range of general cellular activities too, throughout preconception and pregnancy.
Iodine - an essential micro-nutrient in the human diet, most particularly as a component of thyroid hormnes, which play a vital role in the regulation of metabolic processes such as growth and energy expenditure. Iodine deficiency in pregnancy can put the developing baby at greater risk of miscarriage or still-birth.
Iron - research shows that women suffering from anaemia find it harder to conceive. Women often have low Iron status entering pregnancy. A common symptom of deficiency is pica, a craving for strange foods. Iron is not absorbed well without Vitamin C. Taking it on its own can lead to the loss of other essential minerals.
Lycopene and Lutein - Bio-flavanoids. Important for cell growth.
Magnesium - a common deficiency due to depletion of store in most soil. Important for egg development and cell division during pregnancy. Also essential for energy production, proper nerve function and for every major metabolic reaction.
Selenium - Anti-oxidant that helps to protect the body from highly reactive chemical fragments called free-radicals. Helps to prevent chromosome damage, which is known to be a cause of birth defects and miscarriages. Especially important in the 1st Trimester for cell growth, the early development of the brain and spinal chord and the prevention of spina bifida and other birth defects.
