Details
Valerian grows in temperate climes worldwide, the European species being Valerian officinalis. This unusually flavoured herb was held in such esteem in the Middle Ages that it was known as All Heal. Each autumn Alfred Vogel harvested the amazingly hairy roots of his crop, rich in active ingredients, from his organic fields to create his tincture.
Also known as:
Valeriana officinalis
Uses:
• Sleeping problems
• Nervous anxiety and tension
• Stress
Description:
This is a herb which is widely found across Europe. It is one of the oldest herbs in use and has been the subject of extensive research.
How it works:
The tranquillising action of Valerian has been attributed to a number of components, including a group of compounds known as valepotriates, which have been shown to possess an ability to calm the nerves.
Valerenic acid, found in Valerian, inhibits the breakdown of GABA, which is a chemical transmitter that decreases nervous system activity. Increasing GABA levels in this way helps people who find it hard to switch off, and promotes good sleeping patterns.
In addition, a number of other constituents in Valerian have been shown to possess antispasmodic activity in muscles.
