The History

It all began in 1993 with a meeting of the minds between the future creators of Caudalie – a young couple, Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas – and an eminent Professor of the Pharmacy Faculty of Bordeaux, Professor Vercauteren, on the lands of Château Smith Haut Lafitte. The professor explained to the couple that the grape-seeds they threw away after the harvests were a veritable goldmine! These seeds contain polyphenols, which – when stabilized – are treasure troves for the skin. They are the most powerful free radical traps in the plant world. That’s when it all began!

The Romance

Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas met at university. Passionate about cosmetics and creating a company, they invested all of their energy to ensure the success of Caudalie, with the help of Florence and Daniel Cathiard, Mathilde’s parents and owners of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, an authorized Grand Cru of Graves (Bordeaux).

The Science

According to in vitro tests (Publication Frankel The Lancet, 1993), the grape-seed OPC molecule is 10,000 times more powerful than Vitamin E in combating free radicals. The work required for its extraction is just as impressive: it takes one tonne of grape-seeds to obtain 1 kg of OPC. Similarly, it takes one tonne of vine stalks to extract one kilo of Resveratrol, a stabilized molecule patented in 2001, which provides exceptional action on the stimulation of cellular renewal (contained in the range for skin lacking vitality). Finally, in 2004, a fabulous discovery to promote radiance and treat dark spots allowed us to register a new patent: Viniferine, an extract of vine stalks contained in the Vinoperfect formula.

The Products

Caudalie demands the best for the composition of its products: no artificial colourings, no animal ingredients, and the most natural formulas possible (over 100 extracts from different plants). The company uses plant extracts titrated with active molecules to ensure consistent quality and results. Caudalie does not use mineral oil in the skincare creams. Moreover, the company refuses animal testing.

Caudalie is one of the first Laboratories to have discovered a plant origin extract that replaces synthetic preservatives such as parabens and phenoxyethanol.
