Food Intolerance
NWP Naturopathic Weight Programme
At Essentials Medi-Spa, we use the Asyra Professional, the latest technology from the US which has been in development for the last 50 years, to test for food intolerances. This is done in a non-invasive manor with the use of holding 2 probes in your hands. A small amount of current passes through the cellular structure of the organ, gland or system to reveal the functional status of the tissues. The Asyra has the ability to accurately screen the body for sensitivities to over 200 foods. www.asyra.com
Once you have your screening with our Naturopath/Nutritionist you receive a printout of your results at the end of the screening. Then you will receive diet and lifestyle advice from the practitioner. Interestingly, once you have avoided foods to which you are intolerant, the immune system seems to reset itself, the specific IgG levels come down and may stay down. Many people have managed to re-introduce problem foods ranging from 3months to after a year after their symptoms have gone without further ill effects. Although initially when foods are cut out you may become slightly more sensitive to them for a short time.
Basically when comparisons have been done with blood tests the Asyra has had comparable results with up to 98% accuracy. Articles claiming that this is an inaccurate process are usually reporting where the testing is done by someone who is poorly trained on the use of the machine or is a non-practitioner whose application of the results is not accurate. The Asyra screen is not recommended for the first trimester of pregnancy and people with a pacemaker.
At Essentials Medi Spa our practitioner has been properly trained on health supplements, the use of the Asyra machine as well as in practicing as a Naturopath.

Additional Information
People often get food allergy and food intolerance confused and think that they are the same thing. However food allergies are usually more severe than food intolerance and involve different parts of the immune system.
Allergy usually involves an immediate adverse reaction to food which involves the immune system, specifically affecting Immunoglobulin E(IgE), and can lead to anaphylactic shock. Other symptoms include swollen lips, mouth and tongue, urticaria(rash) and vomiting. Some foods causing allergy are peanuts or shellfish.
Food intolerance on the other hand is more of a delayed reaction which can start anytime from eating the food to a few days later. It is thought food intolerance is involved with the Immunoglobulin G (IgG), or that food passes from the gut into the blood stream before the protein fragments (peptides) are broken down properly and causes a reaction due to a leaky gut and problems with digestive enzymes.
Symptoms of food intolerance are usually multiple, not consistent and may vary from: anxiety, mouth ulcers, aching joints and muscles, fatigue, headache/migraine, sinus and mucous problems, digestive disturbances (indigestion, discomfort, bloating, gas etc.), hyperactivity, weight gain etc. The most common food intolerances in order of frequency are milk, eggs, nuts, fish/shellfish, wheat, chocolate, pork/bacon, chicken, tomato, soft fruit, cheese and yeast. Stimulants such as tea, chocolate, sugar and coffee are often also culprits.
Fortunately food intolerances are usually more reversible than food allergies which are mostly non-reversible.
